On November 5, 2024, the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, named Dodik Setiawan Nur Heriyanto, S.H., M.H., LL.M., Ph.D.—a lecturer at the UII Faculty of Law and Director of BILALS—as the best presenter. Dodik presented his paper titled “Between Reality and Ideality Regarding Services for Students with Disabilities: A Study on National and International Accreditation Measurements for Higher Education in Indonesia.”
This paper offers a strategic solution to the challenges of providing services for students with disabilities in Indonesian universities. Dodik’s research was informed by his experience managing the Undergraduate Law Study Program at the UII Faculty of Law and his role as a consultant appointed by the Ministry of Education and Culture for several law schools undergoing international accreditation.
The paper was presented at ICLAVE (The 6th International Conference on Law and Governance in a Global Context), a two-day event held at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia, Depok. This conference also coincided with the 100th anniversary of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia.
In his presentation, Dodik stated:
“Law schools in Indonesia are currently racing to achieve international accreditation. Many international accreditation bodies require criteria that guarantee inclusive and non-discriminatory educational services. However, in general, Indonesian universities only draft regulations as ‘paper-based’ documents without effectively implementing comprehensive services for people with disabilities on campus. Even when available, these are often limited to physical facilities. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new performance indices for universities to ensure that the values of inclusion and non-discrimination are implemented effectively.”
The award was presented directly by the leadership of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia, during the closing ceremony on November 5, 2024. Dodik hopes this achievement will serve as an inspiration to remain productive and creative despite his busy schedule managing the study program.
